Cruiseabout

In a previous lifetime, I used to work on the marketing team for Flight Centre Travel Group, and the first brand I ever worked on was Cruiseabout. After 4 years I developed a particularly niche skillset, with my digital marketing and website skills combined with an extensive cruise knowledge. So when the brand was revitalised in 2023, my previous manager contacted me to put those skills to work again, helping to resurrect the brand through copy and web development. Challenge accepted!

Client
Cruiseabout, part of the Flight Centre Travel Group

Project
September 2023 - April 2024

Project Brief

I was contracted - initially - on a project basis, with the brief to provide:

✺ 70 pages of website copy and 20 blogs for the new Cruiseabout website, including SEO optimisation, image searching, and content upload

✺ Website usability testing

✺ Strategic consultation on the project as a whole

Once the initial contract was fulfilled, I worked on a retainer basis for a three month period, providing external support to the small marketing team.

The initial project was a mammoth task, with each webpage having 8 to 10 pages of actual copy by the time I was done. Then, I had to upload the content to the website itself. This was done alongside the web development team as they designed and built the content blocks, and I created the page layouts using the sections they created. It involved a lot of collaboration between the msyelf, the external web team, and the internal Cruiseabout team, across multiple timezones. 4am starts, late nights at my desk, and Zoom calls at odd hours became the order of the day. But, my cruise knowledge quickly came flooding back - it was like riding a bicycle. If said bicycle was lost at sea. And while I love working with small businesses, it was a nice change of pace to be “back” in that corporate world that I once loved, knowing that I could keep pace and hadn’t lost that kind of strategic thinking that is required for a big brand.

Once the initial project component was completed and the website was launched - in stages - I was contracted by Cruiseabout for a three month period, working for them three days a week from home. In this capacity, I filled in whatever web support and content creation needs the team had. And with a team of only one, a lot of support was needed. I did everything from creating cruise product specials on the website, to writing and uploading more cruise line/ship/destination content to further pad out the website. I am currently no longer on retainer with the brand as they hired internally and no longer have extensive needs for external support. However, I still work with the brand on an ad hoc basis, providing additional support and content where needed.
